Trauma leaves deep emotional scars, sometimes affecting even the most intimate parts of a relationship. In a world where simple swiping and matching have become the norm, the dynamics of sexual health and wellbeing have taken on new dimensions, rendering it all the more vital to discuss. So, this week on Reloscope: The Relationship Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella sits down with medical anthropologist Treena Orchard to deconstruct the nuances of consent, boundaries, and sexual empowerment.
Fascinated by digital technology and relationships of all kinds, Dr. Treena Orchard has penned her years of dating app experiences into her book ‘Sticky, Sexy, Sad’, which explains how these platforms are impacting sex, romance, and communication in the modern day, combined with her insights as an anthropologist. But that aside, she serves as associate professor at Western University’s School of Health Studies.
In this episode, Dr. Treena Orchard shares her puzzlement at how difficult it was to get past the ‘texting phase’, recounting that most dating app exchanges go no further than through the phone. But beyond that, Dr. Treena Orchard expresses that most dating apps should do a better job of promoting sexual health awareness, suggesting campaigns where compelling information is integrated into the sign-up process, or even in their marketing collateral.
Together, Dr. Treena Orchard and Marie discuss the future of sexual health and well-being, from technological advancements, to more holistic sex education in schools. So, tune in for a cathartic conversation filled with nuggets of personal anecdotes, sexual health wisdom, and more.

Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast
Relationships are like a kaleidoscope -- lots of little shapes in lots of colours that blend together in sometimes beautiful, sometimes uncomfortable ways. They're complicated, different personalities and different expectations, and for most of us, negotiating all of that is tough. Your Host, Marie Stella Quek, is going to be your companion, your friend, your agony aunt riding with you on your journey to a healthier relationship. She talks to experts who give actual good advice on a range of topics, like encouraging emotional intimacy through mindful communication and dealing with a partner who has anxiety. And sometimes, things get a little bit spicy. Each topic addresses an element from the comprehensive framework of several domains and elements created by the Center for Relationships Science and we would like to credit them for their work.
